What does your VIN say?

The VIN alone, 17 characters (field E on the registration document). AUTODOC's own decoder reads it here, on this server: nothing is sent to anyone else and the VIN is not stored.

How it works

How often is it right?the exact car for 7 in 10 VINs

Measured on 306,661 VINs of AUTODOC customers, each with the car its owner was looking for parts for, none of them used to build the decoder:

73.6%the very car first (53.1% without the customers' choices)
89.2%the right model
79.8%the right engine (power and capacity)

A VIN AUTODOC customers searched parts for before is known: its car comes first, exact. Over all their searches, the very car first for 80.8%.

Where do the answers come from?AUTODOC's own tables, no AI

Every answer is worked out on this server in about a millisecond, from AUTODOC's own tables: official vehicle registration data, the manufacturers' VIN rules and the cars AUTODOC customers chose for VINs like yours. No web search, no AI model, no paid VIN service.

93 millionregistered vehicles with a VIN behind the tables (119 million rows read)
1.4 millionentries per VIN pattern: models, engines with their codes, gearbox, body and drive
913,992VINs known from AUTODOC parts searches: their car is exact

The VIN's first 11 characters are looked up in those tables: the model, and the engines that VIN pattern has on the road, most common first, each with its AUTODOC car id, engine code and KBA number. Some makers write the engine into the VIN, and then the answer names it; others, the Volkswagen Group above all, do not, and then the answer is the engine most cars with that pattern have, with the others listed. The power from the registration document (P.2) settles it.

Is my VIN stored?no

No. The VIN you type is decoded and counted once, as a salted hash, for the «decoded» figure at the top: the VIN itself is not written anywhere. If you mark an answer or pick your car, only the first 11 characters are kept (maker, model code, year, plant: no serial number), with the car you picked or what you wrote about it.

The tables behind the answers hold counts per VIN pattern, and for VINs AUTODOC customers searched parts for, a keyed hash of the VIN with the car: the VIN cannot be read back from it, and without the server's key nobody can tell whether a VIN is in it. No full VIN, serial number, number plate or owner leaves the registers' files or the shop's logs, and of a parts search never who searched.
